Why people believe in God

Everyone needs hope, someone, somewhere to look towards. When you are in the depths of despair, God is the only one that you can turn to, for who else would have his door open, ready to listen? Even if there is the slightest bit of hope that there is someone listening to you pouring out your heart, you feel comforted, whatever the religion you profess and whether or not you practice.

Sometimes people forget that they believe in God but yet when they are in doubt, in pain or in joy, they mention God. It has become impulse or second nature to say, 'Thank God', 'Why me God?' and 'Jesus' to a lot of people. Maybe these phrases are just words to them but it is hard to say that they do not think of God on their best and worst days.

To believe in God is to know or trust in a higher being capable of taking charge of your life and troubles. The destitute and the poor need to believe for without God, who can they entrust to better their lives? God is the all seeing, the One they entrust to look out for them, to see all the pain, hardships, trials and tribulations that they are going through. Their belief in God helps them make it through their lives, believing that there will be a day when they shall not want. Without such hope, how could they survive the doldrums of daily life?

The very rich believe in God to protect them against all their real and imaginary enemies, God the omnipotent, more powerful than all their money can buy. They give to causes trusting that their money will help buy them a place at His side.

The middle class are the only ones too busy with their own lives to practice actively and yet most will make the time to attend church, service or prayers but only at their convenience. If such meets were to interrupt with their work or family life, God is preempted. Even in such circumstances, we can see that there is a need to believe.

Belief in God acts as guide to conscience, steers us away from deeds that would be considered evil and when such deeds are committed, belief in God, His willingness and ability to forgive allows us to go on with a somewhat clear conscience. In short, belief in God gives us the all encompassing hope that we all need to get on with life.
