In the Law Court, two people in the witness box looked uneasily at the woman in the Dock. The smile on her face vanished when the Judge warned her that she was facing jail. Both witness’s knew the defendant as Bella Smith.
It all began a year earlier when, we’ll call him Nobby for now, went for surgery to remove a badly damaged toe.
Another man, who was to be known as Cindy, was in for "other" surgery.
Nobby and his wife were going through a rough patch. It was his wife’s sister who had been getting Nobby’s affections lately.
Meanwhile, Cindy was looking forward to living life as a woman.
Quite by chance Nobby Smith and Cindy Jones found themselves in the same Hospital pre-surgery room, being prepared for their operations. Both were too anxious about their impending surgery to strike up a conversation. It was left to the kindly Nurse to make their stay comfortable.
After surgery, the patients were taken back to the ward.
It took the Matron by surprise when Cindy asked why her toe had been removed. Further down the ward, a mans scream could be heard miles away.
“In my opinion,” the surgeon continued, “The defendant, Nurse Bella Smith, got the patients notes mixed up.”
