1990s Movies You Really Must See

To explore many of the best movies of the 1990s, start with the following movies as gateways to some of the cinema trends, great actors, and great directors of 1990's.

     *Heathers:  1988.  Directed by Michael Lehmann.  Starring Winona Ryder, Christian Slater, and Shannen Doherty.  Produced by New World Pictures.  One win and two other nominations for Independent Spirit Awards.  

     *Thelma and Louise:  1991.  Directed by Ridley Scott.  Starring Susan Sarandon, Geena Davis, and Harvey Keitel.  Produced by Pathe Entertainment.  One win and five additional nominations for Oscars.  One win and two additional nominations for the Golden Globe.

     *Pulp Fiction:  1994.  Directed by Quentin Tarantino.  Staring John Travolta, Uma Thurman, and Samuel L. Jackson.  Produced by Miramax Films.  One win and six other nominations for Academy Awards.  One win at Cannes.  One win and five other nominations for Golden Globes.  Four wins and one other nomination for the Independent Spirit Awards.

     *Sense and Sensibility:  1995.  Directed by Ang Lee. Starring Emma Thompson, Kate Winslet, and Hugh Grant.  Produced by Columbia Pictures.  One win and six other nominations for Academy Awards.  Two wins and four other nominations for the Golden Globes.

   *Glory:  1989.  Directed by Edward Zwick.  Starring Matthew Broderick, Denzel Washington, and Morgan Freeman.  Produced by TriStart Pictures.  Three wins and two additional nominations for the Oscars.  One win and four additional nominations for the Golden Globes.  

Start with these films and then branch out in one of several directions.  The actors, directors, and themes connect to other important and amazing films of the 1990's a well as key films in the first decade of 2000's.  

Glory was an important movie for Morgan Freeman, Denzel Washington, and Mathew Broderick.  Washington won supporting actor awards at Oscars and the Golden Globes.  He went on to be a leading man in several other 1990's films such as Crimson Tide, Malcolm X, and Courage Under Fire.
