Ron Paul's potential 2012 run for United States president

by Jay Moody

Created on: February 20, 2011   Last Updated: April 26, 2011

Ever since the election of Barrack Obama in 2008, pundits on both the right and the left have speculated about the next republican nominee.  The top contenders’ names have been thrown around with the assumption that the nominee will be one of the same favorites that fell short in 2008.  At the head of the fray has been 2008 republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin, Mitt Romney and FOX News contributors Mike Huckabee and Newt Gingrich.  But one man stands poised to upset the apple cart again, Texas congressman Ron Paul.

A lot has changed in the United States since Ron Paul made his run for the republican nomination in 2008.  With the emergence of the Tea Party, constitutional activists reacting against the Obama administration’s controversial health care reform efforts, and the rising rate of unemployment, the nation has witnessed a conservative ascendancy.  The stunning election of Scott Brown to the Massachusetts congressional seat formerly held by liberal icon Ted Kennedy sent shockwaves through the political landscape and heralded in the massive defeats that were to befall democrats in 2010.

Now with the House firmly under republican control and the senate under their challenging influence, it is clear that republicans have a good shot at the White House in 2012.  And with the election of so many Tea Party backed candidates in 2008, it seems the country is hungering for smaller government and a return to constitutional principles.

In plain language Ron Paul explains his principles, standing squarely on constitutional issues.  His homepage shows the congressman’s unequivocal support for “limited constitutional government, low taxes, free markets, and a return to sound monetary policies.”  Furthermore it explains that “Dr. Paul never votes for legislation unless the proposed measure is expressly authorized by the Constitution.”

According to Ron Paul, one of the most important issues in the country right now is our current health care system which he describes as “broken” and “must eventually be abolished if we want to regain both our health and our freedom.”  “Obamacare” however, he calls “the worst possible answer. All it does is perpetuate a flawed system by forcing everyone to become a client of insurance companies, even those who don’t want to or need to participate.”*
