The 1980’s was a time of great movies. Although the movies back then weren’t filled with stunning animation and 3D effects, the simplicity of them was a part of what made them so endearing. Actors such as Tom Cruise, Patrick Swayze and Drew Barrymore were just beginning their rise to superstardom and the "Brat Pack" were in their prime. Here is a look at some of the best movies from the 1980's.
E.T – The Extra Terrestrial (1982)
Starring a very young Drew Barrymore, E.T is one of the best loved movies from the 1980’s – and possibly of all time. E.T is the story of a lost alien who befriends a young boy named Elliot. Elliot brings E.T to live in his family home, telling only his older brother and younger sister (Barrymore) of his existence. E.T’s mission is to gain communication with his home planet in order to get back there, so he enlists the help of Elliot and his siblings to make it happen.
E.T is a movie that will make you laugh, cry and really touch your heart. With strong messages about friendship, it is a great 1980’s movie which has really stood the test of time.
A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)
A Nightmare on Elm Street literally is a movie about nightmares. Not just any nightmare though. The same nightmare. Teenager Nancy Thompson is alarmed when she begins having frightening dreams about a disfigured man with knives for fingers. Her worry is heightened when she discovers her friends have also been having the exact same nightmare. One by one, Nancy’s friends die in their sleep after coming face to face with the man – Freddy Kreuger – in their dreams and Nancy realises the only way to stay alive is not to fall asleep.
The reason A Nightmare on Elm Street is such a good movie is that although it is a little far fetched, the concept is quite brilliant. Just thinking about how terrifying it would be to have your dreams invaded by a murderer can make a chill run down your spine. A Nightmare on Elm Street also features a young Johnny Depp – which is just an added bonus!
The Breakfast Club (1985)
When five teenagers from the same high school who have nothing in common are thrown together for detention, it sounds like a recipe for disaster. However, they quickly begin to bond by trying to find ways to fill their detention time and before they realise what is happening, they start to reveal their secrets only to discover find they are much more similar than they could have ever imagined.
