The reality of working from home

by Katrina Hardeman

Created on: February 15, 2011

After months of job searching, you land this home phone/computer based business/position, and all that goes with it.

Please take the time to imagine this fantasy: Waking up on YOUR schedule. Your only commute is to roll over in bed, and clock in on your phone. Being able to shower for as long as you want, taking time to appreciate the drops of hot water, and relish in the fact that nobody can hear you sing or see you dance in the shower. You can attend to your every hygiene need without being rushed. The uniform of the day is a nice fluffy bathrobe and slippers, or what ever you feel like. The coffee pot was programmed the night before, and it’s your brand. It’s full and all yours, no need to make another pot because someone took the last cup without being courteous and making another. You can actually take the time to make a half way decent breakfast, and enjoy it. Chopin's Nocturne op.9 No.2, playing in the back of your mind, as the thought of laying on your chaise on the back patio, sipping a refreshing beverage by the crystal clear glistening pool. Just lazily watching the tree branches lazily sway in the breeze, and the clouds drift slowly and quietly by. *the phone rings*

Reality sets in:

Picking it up and looking at the caller ID, it’s work. The sound of a record scratching and your heart pounding replaces the peaceful sound of relaxation as you panic to get in a more professional state of mind. Petrified and forgetting your training, and answer with a shaky “Hello”, Beating yourself up because you realized what comes out of your mouth, a wave of relief washes over you as you get a recording prepping you to take your first call. Phew

Let’s take a step into the real world for a moment. Before diving in head first out of desperation into the empty pool of the economy ask yourself the following:

1. Is this a product that I can stand behind 100%?

If you aren’t enthusiastic about it, your customers will know. They are calling or emailing you to feed off your energy to see if the product is worth their money. Take the time to research it, talk to people you know and trust who aren’t just trying to get you into the newest MLM scam. If the pressure’s on and you don’t feel right about it. Don’t do it. You’ll know when it feels right.

2.How many hours a week can I effectively dedicate to my business? Does the work schedule allow me to make time to relax? Get organized.

Seriously, working 24/7
