A Date With Myra
It was a special day for Joey. Every Saturday was special. Joey was hurrying around the house, getting everything ready for his lunch date with Myra. He loved Myra. She was his best friend. Joey was twelve, but he wasn't sure how old Myra was. He only knew she had been around most of his life. Just about as long as he could remember. Myra was perfect. She always played the games Joey wanted to play and she never complained, Sometimes they would take walks in the park. Most people in the park would stop to say hi to Myra and Joey always swelled with pride.
He had to hurry. Joey raced back through the house and to the hall closet to get the tablecloth The tablecloth that his mother set aside for his special lunch dates with Myra. He took the tablecloth and spread it over the picnic table in the backyard. The weather was perfect. He had to hurry. Myra would be there soon. Myra was Joey's constant companion. They did everything together. He loved Myra. Usually, while Joey did his homework, Myra was right by his side. Always giving her approval. Yes, Myra was special.
Joey layed out the plates. He had everything almost ready. He dashed in the house to get the bologna sandwiches. That was Myra's favorite lunch. Bologna and cheese sandwiches. He poured the kool-aid carefully. Myra liked the red kind. Myra would often wait for Joey when he got off the school bus and then chase him inside. Joey especially liked that. When Joey was sick, Myra would would always be right by his side comforting him. She was wonderful. So full of energy and so full of life. Joey thought for a moment. He didn't think he had a friend in the world that was as special as Myra was.
Chirping birds in the trees above brought Joey back onto the task at hand. Joey surveyed the picnic table one last time. Napkins! I need napkins, thought Joey. Myra usually made a mess. He sprinted back inside to retrieve the napkins. A quick dash back outside. Just as Joey was placing the napkins on the table, he heard a familiar sound. Everything seemed to be right and in place, Joey turned around to see Myra running through the yard. Joey smiled and pulled out Myra's chair.
"I got your favorite, girl." said Joey.
Myra, Joey's wide eyed English bulldog hopped in her chair. Joey loved Myra.
