Book Review of
DESCRIPTION & SETTING
By Ron Rozelle,
2005, Writer's Digest Books
DESCRIPTION & SETTING, by Ron Rozelle, provides a good overview and plenty of material for further reflection. Well worth the purchase price.
The book starts with an overview of why description and setting are important and then provides tips for gathering useful details. The bulk of the text deals with a variety of issues relating to description:
Descriptive tools
Showing versus telling
Sensory description
Character description
Time and place
Specialized fiction
Driving the story
Critics of this book will, no doubt, find subjects that aren't thoroughly addressed by the author. And some may disagree with the author's logic on a few issues. I prefer to focus on what I can learn from each book, rather than what is missing or misconstrued. There's plenty to learn from this one.
