Most people shy away from going to the dentist to receive any form of dental treatment. The thought of sprawling out across the dentist’s chair, and opening lips and teeth wide for the entry of sharp, penetrating probes, and drills is not much fun for anyone. And while there are those who will put on a brave face, and bolster in for expected torture, there are also those who will experience serious anxiety over a dentist appointment. The later are not alone, as it is estimated that 80% of adult Americans fear the dentist.
Experiencing such great anxiety creates a very problematic obstacle for many Americans. They need dental preventative care, and due to an immobilizing fear, they are not receiving it. As they continue to avoid dentists at all cost, the condition of oral health disease often occurs. Eventually, the problem may go far beyond poor dental health, as gum disease, and other related oral disease could become serious enough to inflict further complications in other parts of the body. Studies have now linked illnesses such as heart disease, stroke, and diabetes to infections of oral disease.
Fortunately, victims of dental anxiety may take some comfort in knowing that many dentists are trained in handling phobia patients. Dentists are not oblivious to the 80% of Americans who run far and wide, away from receiving dental care. And having this knowledge, many dental facilities have adapted a certain type of protocol, to directly address the anxiety of patients. When choosing a dentist, it may be wise to simply call around, or search the web to inquire as to rather or not a facility offers dentists on staff, who specialize in the treatment of patients with dental anxiety. If not, you may at least garner the feel for the personality of the practice, and perhaps, sense an instinct inside, to trust their care. But if you are not yet comfortable, continue in your search.
Understand that the most important step to conquering your dental phobia is finding a dentist who is right for you. Having a list of options will help to ease your fears, as it will allow you to feel that you have some control over the situation.
Consider what you need from your dentist, knowing that a good dentist will be patient, competent, and endeavor to make each visit pain free. A good dentist should also genuinely care, and have the ability to nurture patients through possible past, dentistry, trauma, and or sources of fear.
