How does God work?

Simply put, in mysterious ways! Job’s assertion was that God’s ways are past finding out: who have searched into the deep things of God, they are high above the heavens and deeper than the depths of the sea. The divinity and supremacy of God is such that we cannot immediately grasp his ways, or his will by our puny comprehension.

One might say, God works in an orderly manner. Just a cursory look at the first chapter of Genesis will paint a vivid picture of an orderly articulate God who patterns his work accordingly. God didn’t create man before he created the environment in which he was going to live. In the same vein he didn’t create plants without first sorting out the sun which was going to be their source of energy. He created the sea before the animals in it. He created man before the woman; the seed giver has to come before the seed bearer! He also didn’t do all the work at once; isn’t it interesting that an all powerful, all knowing, all potent God chose to do the tiny work of creation in six days, frankly speaking, he could have done it in a day if he so desired! Hence, the greatest hint about God’s Occupation. Everything he does has some importance and significance attached to it.

Secondly, from the same first chapter of Genesis, you begin to see how God consults within himself. “Let us make man in our own image…” The object of that address has been subject of much debate over the past centuries, but the key indication about God’s pattern of working is that everything he does is settled within him before being done, in other words, being three persons in one, he deliberates and arbitrates within himself before doing anything. Hence the reason why he constantly attests to his own work saying, “God saw that it was good...” well, didn’t he know anything he made was definitely going to be good?

Thirdly, in the same chapter, we see how the story of creation is so easy to understand, and so well written in simple English, yet, over the entire history of the church, how it has caused so much controversy and debate, so much so, that endless theories and theologies have filled the pages of countless number of books that sit on our bookshelves. I bet someone is writing another one just as I write this! It goes without saying that the cleverest of us, with the best of intellects, cannot even figure out the simplest of God’s truth. What better testament
