Book Review of
PLOT & STRUCTURE, Techniques and Exercises for Crafting a Plot That Grips Readers from Start to Finish
by James Scott Bell
2004, Writer's Digest Books
ONE OF THE BEST
PLOT & STRUCTURE, by James Scott Bell, is an insightful study of plot and structure, together with practical tips and exercises on how to improve skills. I don't agree with all of the author's thinking, but this is one of the best books on these subjects.
As expected, the initial chapters define and explain plot and the structure of novels. Subsequent chapters cover plot ideas, beginnings, middles, ends, scenes, character arc, and plotting systems. The final chapters offer tips for plot development and for troubleshooting plot problems.
There's always room for improvement. I didn't find the author's LOCK system helpful. LOCK stands for Lead, Objective, Confrontation, and Knockout. The concept doesn't adequately explain the plotting process, and I doubt that it will stand the test of time. I also question the value of Bell's Pyramid (passion, potential, precision). I would have appreciated more on scenes and sequels. Maybe an updated edition will address these issues.
