Success is personal to us all. What may be counted as a success for one person, may not be for another. For example, success to you, may mean financial security. Never having to worry about lack of money would certainly be the dream of a vast majority of us. Yet, to another person, success may mean finding love, settling down and raising a family. It all depends upon how each of us views success, and what that means to us all.
However, having too much money can bring on its own problems and stresses. And this may not be the kind of success that some people are looking for. To be content, successful and happy in life does not always mean that money has to be involved. Indeed our goals could be rising to the top in our chosen hobby. Even we, as writers, may all want success for different reasons.
As writers, would success mean writing a best-selling novel? Or would success mean that our writing {whether it be poetry, short stories or indeed a novel} change the way people think - change their viewpoint of life? We as writers know that words have that ability, that power to be able to make the reader feel what we, as writers feel. So, to some, writing may not mean the success of selling books, but rather, it would mean the changing of viewpoints to whoever reads our words. If your words can move hearts and minds then that could be construed - by some writers at least - as success.
The point is no matter what business or walk of life you may be in, success is down to how you, yourself, perceive it. Success is not always about money, but it can be about peace of mind, about health, happiness and contentment. If, in your life, you have achieved all of your goals, and you are happy - then you have been successful.
If you have a family who loves you, and you them, and that is what you have always wanted out of life, then you are successful in reaching that goal. However, if you have been successful in your line of work, whatever that may be, yet you are unhappy and unsettled, would you still say that your life was a success?
The answer would have to be no. For someone to feel loneliness, unhappiness and sadness, because of what they have been unable to achieve in their personal life {despite success in their working life}, then they would say that they have been unsuccessful. Money, although it is a barometer of success, is not always the measure by which some people mark their success against.
Only you can tell if you have achieved what you have wanted to achieve in life. Then you can truly say that you have been 'successful' in reaching that goal you set yourself. Success is personal to each one of us, and the way we measure it - whether it be against money, having a family, health, happiness or contentment - is again, personal. We can only know we have achieved our goals, when we are content and happy in our lives. That is the true measure of success.
