David Robinson was drafted in order to revive a franchise in the San Antonio Spurs that badly needed a jolt. You have to remember that this was a long time before the days of Tim Duncan and Gregg Popovich coming on the scene in order to help the Admiral out. Larry Brown was the coach of the San Antonio Spurs during his rookie season and this is part of the reason why David Robinson was able to lead the Spurs to a 56-26 record and a historic turnaround.

David Robinson had a historic rookie of the year season because it is so rare for someone who comes out of their service directly to the country and has a phenomenal NBA season like he did. Robinson was also able to revive the San Antonio Spurs who had not had such a dominating and exciting player on their roster since the days of George Gervin. David Robinson has also done a lot for the community of San Antonio.

Playing on the San Antonio Spurs during some of their losing seasons was not something that came as a surprise for David Robinson. David Robinson's rookie season was not a bad year given that he had proven NBA teammates on the roster such as Maurice Cheeks and Terry Cummings. The Spurs were able to compete well during David Robinson's rookie season of 1989 in the Midwestern Division despite having to square off against an established team like the Utah Jazz with John Stockton and Karl Malone. You have to wonder whether Robinson would have won his first NBA Title sooner had Spurs owner Red McCombs had not fired head coach Larry Brown.

You cannot downplay the amount of success that Sean Elliott was able to help the San Antonio Spurs find as well.  You want to make sure that people are able to find out the history of Sean Elliott's comeback from a kidney ailment.  The kidney ailment apparently helped Sean Elliott realize he had to become a better all around player and not depend on his athleticism as much. 

The Spurs have also had a couple of capable and great point guards in recent decades with the likes of Avery Johnson and Tony Parker.  Avery Johnson has been an NBA head coach and his own regard.  Tony Parker has been the lead guard in helping Tim Duncan find his way to numerous championships
