First, let me start out by saying I have never read an Amish novel. I have always been very intrigued by the Amish way of living. So pure, so simple. There have been times when I read an article in a magazine about Amish girls who leave the community and I have always wondered what would I do? I often think I would like the Amish way of living. To live in a simple world where material things don’t matter. A world without television, automobiles, cell phones and internet. Women tend to stay home to raise the family; cook, clean, sew and some help with work. The men tend to the land. Everything is homemade; clothing, food, and in many instances the furniture and homes. Hard work? Yes, I agree. But to live in a world where you don’t miss the things you don’t have and appreciate what you do.
Ok, so I love the baking and cooking part and maybe the sewing. I can garden, but I could not tend to a whole plot of land, nor could I stay in a community without venturing into the outside world. Of course, this is what I am accustomed to, so I know what I would miss if I were to leave.
In An Amish Love: Part 1 A Marriage of the Heart by Kelly Long – Joseph Lambert knows the best of both worlds. And the worst. Living in an Amish community at young age, little Joseph got a taste of the Amish living. His parents decided to leave, taking his sister and him along. Joseph later split from his parents and his sister went off to college. He found himself caught up in the English world, fighting a drug addiction.
Dr. Knepp rescues Joseph, bringing him back to the Amish community.
Abigail is strong willed. The marriage, forced. As the story unfolds before our eyes, so does the love before theirs. Abigail lost her mother at a very young age. She never learned how to be a proper Amish wife. Every marriage faces trials and tribulations. Hers was no exception. Day by day she learns something new. Not forced, but wanting. She takes care of Joseph when he has an accident and learns she can love, she can be a wonderful wife. Sometimes love really is all you need.
I feel the story ended much too soon. I would love to read more about these characters. I will be seeking out more stories by Kelly Long.
Story 2 is entitled What the Heart Sees by Kathleen Fuller
