WHEN CHILDREN WEREN'T PRECIOUS
Betty bragged that she got jam on her PB sandwich.
Brad shoved his 2nd helping into my face and yanked it back.
I could barely swallow tiny bites of my slice of bread with PB while
I enviously looked upon the glasses of cold milk everyone else got.
No one was interested in toys I selected to play with…
until I played with them.
Just for relief, I'd hide in a shallow dark
cluttered coat closet
until another pinata was required
and I was sussed out by force.
The childcare woman screeched
"what did you do!"
I sat stunned on the ground, hands gripping chains-
with the entire swing set down around me.
"I was jest swingin'…" I peeped.
Every day was a litany of keep-aways.
This was the first time on any swing-set ever.
I was also the last one remaining
for pick-up that day.
