Inner Light
The moon lit sky across the fragile Atlantic Ocean
gave a haunting glow to the rotting boardwalk that ran for miles on end
starting at infinity and ending at eternity
and made its way around again and again.
The harsh winter winds tossed the snow covered sand around in a turulant fashion
that created a mist of salty recollections of what could have been
And she walked alone and tired,
far too exhausted by the mundane reality of a life not quite lived,
aside from the fragments that remained
in her barren heart.
The inner light had long been extinguished by the notion that things would never be
quite the way the story book had written
and fate and fear walked hand in hand far to many times
and youth had turned into a sullen gray form
that had its momentary fulfillment'
and than faded back to that nothingness
that crept deeper into the edges of the night.
Lost among the ruins was a spirit that once flew with the excitement
of what could have been and yet never was.
It was what it was and it is what it is and all notions
of much else seeped sadly into the brittle ground
like the inner light that was no more.

In the face of despair
Its gaping jaw drooling
I pulled from its teeth
A wisp of hope pooling.
I held that wisp high

I can feel the light at the end of this life
It grows stronger with each day that I live
This light is a part of everyone

Lord Jesus on the first Christmas night,
You came to the world as inner light,
Pushing back the gloom of sin’s dark
Squinting through rain drops
I focus on street lights
not tall observing sentinels
but arranged illumination of a path overgrown
