Time stands still in Springfield, Illinois, which is home to the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum. This is the home of over 100,000 paper documents and life like realistic representation of Mr. President Lincoln and his family.
Its location is at 112 North Sixth Street, Springfield, Il.
HOURS OF OPERATION: Monday – Friday 9am to 5pm.
THE MUSEUM
Entering the museum, is like walking into a “time machine” with replicas of the first lady Mary and her presidential husband Mr. Lincoln. There are actual dresses and clothes that were worn by Mr. and Mrs. Lincoln along with uniforms from the Civil War soldiers, which children can play dress up with in the “Mrs. Lincoln’s Attic” room.
Feel what it must have been like as you watch the dramatic portrayal of the president’s life unfold on stage in the theater room.
“Ghost of the Library” is a holographic demonstration that will take you on a tour of the library and how to use it, you may even get a glimpse of the President himself.
PRESIDENTIAL LIBRARY
The library holds historical paper documents that are of important history of the state of Illinois.
AUDIO VISUAL COLLECTION
In this area you will find over 400,000 pictures, audio tapes, video tapes, posters and any other media document. You will need to make an appointment to get access to this area, but it is well worth the appointment.
Curators will make copies of an item for you, provided that it will not harm the original item itself. This copy can only be used for personal reference and use. If you don’t want to go to the library itself to get your copy, you can simply fill out the “Photographic Service Order” form. If you would like to use the copy for more than personal use fill out the “Permission to Use Agreement” form. NEWSPAPER MICROFILM COLLECTION
This department holds over 5,000 newspapers, which include a newspaper from Illinois’ 102 counties – some dating back to the 19th century. The Newspaper Microfilm Collection holds anything that was printed in the paper relating to Illinois, including obituaries.
