Noah and the Great Flood: The facts behind the myth

Sharing the Word-Genesis-The Flood of all Floods

Is there a coincidence between the creation and the flood?

When God created the world, it took him six days to create it.  He rested on the seventh day.

Take a look at chapter seven in the book of Genesis.  God wanted seven pairs of every clean animal to go on the ark as well as seven pairs of every type of bird.  God told Noah seven days in advance of when it was going to start raining.  While the weather man of today can know the forecast days in advance, the only weather forecaster in Noah’s days was God.  While the forecaster of today is known to be mistaken, because of a storm changing direction, Noah knew that God’s forecast would be as predicted: forty days and nights of steady rain that would flood the entire world.  No amount of rainfall has ever or will equal the amount that God sent during Noah’s time.

Noah was six hundred years old when the world was flooded.  While he did not spend six hundred years building the boat that would save him and his family-it took him approximately 100 years-there seems to be significance between the six days that it took for God to create the world.  Once he and his family were protected from the rain that was flooding down from the heavens, you can say that Noah rested.  Once God delivered him from the flood waters, Noah did not have to work on the ark any longer.

Noah, because of his faith, believed God when he was told about the flood.  As Hebrews 11:7 states, “By faith Noah, being warned of God of things not seen as yet, moved with fear, prepared an ark to the saving of his house; by the which he condemned the world. And became heir of the righteous which is by faith” (KJV).

Noah built the ark inn fear, because he knew that God is true to his word.  If God said he was going to bring a flood that would wipe out humanity, he was going to do it.  However, Noah was not afraid when he was building the ark.  He knew God would protect him from the flood waters.  Because of Noah’s faith, he and his family were saved.

Even in today’s society, with all the wrong going on in the world, you can avoid many situations by having faith in God.  When you see something bad happen and wonder why God is allowing it to happen, be sure to know that God will deal with the wrongdoers in his own time.  While God will not provide you an ark to deliver you from the corruptness of the world-he is bound by his promise of never to flood the world again with water-he has provided deliverance through his son, Jesus Christ.

“God, give us the faith to believe and the courage and dedication to live out our faith in the midst of a corrupt and violent world.  Amen” (Holman).
