Women can be hard to please, and many women would go so far as to agree with that statement. When it comes to giving a gift, women are especially tricky.

An extravagant gift too soon can be seen as far too much, but too small a gift shows little effort at any relationship stage. There is a happy medium. Well-planned gifts can please any woman, and all it takes is time, investigation and attention. Here are three small romantic

gift ideas for woman in your life:

1. One way to please a woman is to give her something that smells good. Try perfume, body spray or lotion. In the weeks or days leading up to the shopping trip, take a few minutes beyond a normal stop in the bathroom at her place and do a little snooping.

Check out her counters and peek into her cabinets for perfume, spray and lotion bottles. Take note of the scents and stores in which she buys them. Take a sniff of each and note whether she likes flowery scents, musky smells or sweet odors.

Go to woman's favorite store and pick up a bottle of one of her favorites or something new that follows the line of what she already has.

2. Another good, small gift for a woman is clothing. This one can be pretty tricky to pull off, and should only be attempted by a man with fashion sense or the ability to ask for help in a store. Once again, pay attention. Note her style choices and, if possible, take a peek into her closet or at the labels on her jackets.

Also be sure to memorize the sizes. Do not go for jeans or skirts, and instead maybe purchase a new jacket or wrap in a style she would like.

3. Finally, when all else fails, go super romantic and give the gift of time. Try something homemade, like a surprise candlelight meal prepared at home, or a coupon book for little favors like massages, a turn washing the dishes or even a "chick flick" night where there are no complaints about the subject matter.

While it is difficult and takes more than a little effort, it is possible to buy a gift that will please a woman at any stage of a relationship.

All it takes is willingness to listen, look and do a little bit of research.
