Purchasing a gift for a child with autism can be a difficult task. Children with autism can be very in particular and enjoy only certain toys and activities. You must take the child's age group into consideration, severity of autism, communication skills, language skills, interests in play and even their concentration levels. Collecting information on the child will help with choosing the perfect toy. For example the child's learning level may not be the same as his age. Just because he is 10 years old, doesn't mean his mind works the same way as a "typical" 10 year old. That's why collecting information on the child is very important. You may even learn some new and interesting facts about the child!
*Sensory and motor skill*
Most children with autism have issues with their sensory and/or motor skills. Finding toys to help those needs can be very useful. Not only for the child, but for the parents too. Some examples are koosh balls or any other type of ball that has textures, play dough, Dry-erase boards, stacking blocks, finger paints and ball pits. All those toys can provide practice in areas helpful for sensory integration such as vestibular balance, sensory stimulation, body awareness along with gross and fine motor.
*Simple toys*
Purchasing toys that are difficult to play with can sometimes be a waste of money. A lot of children with autism tend to play with toys that are simple in design and functions. Toys that are bulky, loud, too colorful or even different can scare a child with autism. Keeping toys simple will allow the child to focus more clearly and play accordingly.
*Speech and communication*
Depending on the child's language, a toy that involves speech skills may be the perfect gift. Toys that influence proper speech are simple, yet easy to find. Almost anything can be made into a speech activity or game. Flash cards, books, electronic games, play-food, puzzles and even cars are just a few toys that will definitely help with speech issues, if used properly.
You can also talk to the parents of the child if you are running into difficulty choosing the perfect gift. They may be able to help guide you in the right direction. No on knows a child better than their parents!
Please keep in mind that autistic children are the same as any other child. They may just need a little extra guidance, care and attention from their family. With the proper love and care from people around them, it will make all the difference in their world. Paying attention to what the autistic child enjoys will make gift choosing easier. Shopping for a child with autism shouldn't be a chore, it should be a fun experience.
Happy shopping!
