Australia is about the same size as the United States minus the State of Alaska. The major cities in Australia and parts of the coast line are the most heavily populated. Considering the magnitude of land in Australia, anyone coming in from the United States would assess that the entire continent is uninhabited.
For comparison purposes, the population clock on the Australian Bureau of Statistics website predicts that: “On 6 February 2011 at 01:19:28 PM (Canberra time), the resident population of Australia is projected to be 22,553,847.” The population of the United States according to the 2010 data available from the U.S. Census Bureau is 307,006,550.
