Australia is about the same size as the United States minus the State of Alaska.  The major cities in Australia and parts of the coast line are the most heavily populated.  Considering the magnitude of land in Australia, anyone coming in from the United States would assess that the entire continent is uninhabited.

For comparison purposes, the population clock on the Australian Bureau of Statistics website predicts that: “On 6 February 2011 at 01:19:28 PM (Canberra time), the resident population of Australia is projected to be  22,553,847.” The population of the United States according to the 2010 data available from the U.S. Census Bureau is 307,006,550.

♦ What is considered the Outback?

Basically any part of Australia where the population is non-existent is considered the Outback.  A person could live in complete isolation in Australia with a minimum of effort, so driving out into the ‘wild’ would require some preparation to ensure enough supplies and survival equipment based on the length of time a explorer plans to be away and the amount of distance they plan to cover.  A car in excellent condition is a must for those who are planning to drive for several hours in any direction.

♦ Gas Stations

The short and sweet: Few and far between.  A full tank may not get a driver from one station to the next, so it is recommended to carry spare cans filled with gasoline to avoid getting stranded.

It is recommended to take every opportunity to refill the vehicle's gas tank and the portable ones.

Stopping at every station will allow the driver to take a break, ask for road information, secure a place to sleep and even take a shower.  In other words, these stations have sprouted in these remote locations to provide services, rest and safety.

Car, Equipment and Safety

As stated earlier, filling the vehicle with gasoline and carrying extra cans to be able to make the trip back, or to reach the next location, is crucial. Other vehicle related items that should be on the check list include: Engine oil and water for the vehicle, spare tires and required equipment to change flats.  There will be no gas stations or repair shops available on demand in the ‘Outback.'

Once a location to explore has been committed to, travelers should plan an itinerary, let someone know the travel plans, routes, and expected date of return.  This step is critical in case an unforeseen event requires
