Roommate troubles: What is and isn't okay to do

If you've ever had a roommate then you can understand all the conflict that can arise between two people when they live together. I have been in a roommate situation twice in my life and both times ended horribly. My first roommate was a nightmare and treated me like garbage and my second, well, let's just say I am completely broke and in debt because she refused to keep up her end of the bargain.

My first roommate and I moved in together when I was 22. I had just ended an almost 3 year relationship with my college sweetheart and was going through a tough time at home when we decided that since we'd been friends for over 2 years we could handle living together and I moved out. Needless to say that was the end of it all. I then did the ultimate no no and just packed everything up and left. Our one year lease was over by then and I was under no obligation to stay. She even managed to ruin my financial life by withdrawling all the money in a joint account we opened for our bills and letting it stay open after taking her name off. The account accumulated fees that were outragous and now I can't get a bank account anywhere because of this. That is a huge list of what NOT to do to your roommate.

My second roommate was a little different. She was a good friend for
