All week long we have heard all of the comparisons, who is better, whose legacy will be bigger? Well, in my opinion it is way too soon to start truly making those comparisons. Why, you might ask? Favre played 15 years in Green Bay through the death of his Father, his wife's battle with breast cancer, broken bones, and so many things that I am sure that we are unaware of. Granted, he won only one Superbowl for the Packers but that's not to say that he didn't give Green Bay a legitimate shot at getting there throughout his years there.
Rodgers on the other hand is still wet behind the ears. He has been in the NFL since 2005 and has started for the Packers since 2008. It is impressive that he along with his team are on the cusp of reaching the ultimate prize, the World Championship. While a Superbowl ring for Rodgers would definitely bring him one step closer to challenging Favre's legacy. He still has a lot to prove.
Some Packer Fans are still torn between the two. Favre loyalists feel that it is an outright disrespect to even mention Rodgers name in the same breath as Favre's. After all, Favre, was not just a Quaterback,he was, is, an icon of the organization. At one point Farve became so beloved by the town that they named a street after him, "Brett Favre Pass." Yet Rodgers supporters would beg to differ because of the way Favre left the Pack, eventually playing for the Packers biggest Rival the Minnesota Vikings. With a win tomorrow Rodgers would have achieved what Favre was only able to do once! Either way both of these two men are extremely talented, competitive, quarterbacks who represent (ed) one of the most celebrated franchises.
Many have mentioned that while Rodgers was the back up QB to Favre that he was never mentored by the future Hall of Famer. My question to those who expected Favre to mentor Rodgers is, why? As I mentioned before these two men are extremely competitive and it makes no sense that Favre would show the competition how to beat him out for the starting position. Ironically, Rodgers although, never mentored by Favre, has been influenced by Favre's playing style. For example, recently there was a play in which Rodgers scrambled outside of the pocket slipped a way from a couple of tackles and side armed a pass, for no gain or loss, just the fact that he was able to scramble his way out of the sack, his side armed pass was so Favre like.
Whether or not Rodgers surpasses Favre's legacy that is yet to be determined. I, along with many other fans, look forward to watching him try.
