It has been almost a decade since Michael Jordan made that last-minute shot that gave Chicago Bulls its 6th NBA championship title. After that, it was season after season of losing and failure to reach the playoffs. They had drafted some good players in the past (Elton Brand, Eddy Curry, Tyson Chandler), but they just can't seem to make it work. Fans were still supporting the team but all those disappointment is testing the patience even of a hardcore Bulls' fan.
During the past seasons, however, a ray of hope is beginning to shed light for the team. The young and gritty Bulls continue to improve and the team chemistry is really working. Drafts and good decision of management on which player to move or keep had paid off. The unqestionable leadership and knowledge of the game of Coach Scott Skiles have this team ticking off like clockwork.
Following are the current key Bulls players and what each of them brings to the team:
Kirk Hinrich One of the best defensive PG in the league. Captain Kirk's leadership is also invaluable on the court and his passing and playmaking is vital to the Bull's offensive strategy. His defense will also be counted on heavily when they face other premiere guards on playoffs like Dwayne Wade or Gilbert Arenas.
Ben Gordon One of the most dangerous scorers, capable of heating up and putting up shots in just a matter of minutes. Gordon has also improved his field goal percentage from just over 42% last season to 45.6% this season. He had already scored over 40 points twice this season.
Ben Wallace The Bulls' prized acquisition this offseason, Big Ben provides toughness and protects the lane. This enables the perimeter players to gamble on their defense and to initiate fastbreaks more often.
Luol Deng Luol Deng has really shined this season as the Bulls' most stable go-to guy in offense. Averaging 18.7 pts and 7.1 reb, Deng has shown that he can be an all-star in the NBA.
Andres Nocioni Although he was mostly injured this season, Nocioni's no-nonsense hustle will be crucial during playoffs. For a big man with almost 40% 3-pt shooting percentage, he will make opponents pay when they clog down the lane or double team Deng or Gordon.
PJ Brown A veteran role player who still gets the job done when it comes to hustling and cleaning the boards. His leadership and experience is also invaluable for the young Bulls.
Chris Duhon A superb PG coming off the bench to relieve starter PG Hinrich. He's playmaking is not as good as Kirk's but he's defense and 3-pt shooting is quite reliable as well.
Thabo Sefolosha and Tyrus Thomas This year's two rookies represent the future of Bulls. Although they are given just minimum playing time, both have shown great athleticism and knowledge of the game. A few more games under their belt and they will be ready for the primetime.
This season's Bulls may not be a powerhouse team as Jordan's Bulls teams before. But the teamwork has been clicking so far, and each player seems to know exactly what is needed of him. With great direction, hard work, and a little luck, they might just be able to go deep in the playoffs.
