The root chakra, which is located at the base of the spine, is one of the seven major chakras of the body. Also known as the muladhara, the root chakra is associated with grounding, being in the moment, survival and security. When the root chakra is functioning properly it is able to channel the energy of the earth up into the higher chakras, creating a sound and balanced foundation.
Because the root chakra is associated with the element of earth, it brings with it feelings of calm, security and personal empowerment. The archetype associated with the root chakra is Mother, which is the aspect that helps us be good nurturers to ourselves, make responsible choices and to accept ourselves for who we are.
Signs of dysfunction
When the root chakra is not functioning in a balanced and healthy way a person can end up feeling vulnerable, anchorless and spiritually or emotionally disconnected. Because this chakra is so closely linked with the archetype of Mother, one may lack good self-care skills or experience harsh self-judgments. Another sign of dysfunction in the root chakra is consistently falling into the role of victim. This is when a person becomes disconnected from their feelings, and perceives the world to be against them. They also tend to believe the negative emotions they feel are caused by outside sources, and often feel stuck in a state of helpless fear.
Getting things back in balance
One way to bring one's root chakra into healthy balance is through the important Mother archetype. This basically means taking good care of oneself through proper nutrition, exercise and getting good rest. It also means a person needs to be honest about the emotions they're feeling. They must take responsibility for those feelings, while realizing the personal strengths they possess. This can draw them out of the role of victim and help them feel more secure and empowered.
There are some other good ways to connect with, balance and heal the root chakra, such as:
Being outside in nature, sitting on the ground with a tree as a backrest or lying on the grass and feeling the energy of the earth
Doing work that involves literally getting in touch with the earth such as gardening, pulling weeds, potting plants or planting seeds.
Meditation
Working with clay
Hatha yoga
Visualizing the color red (a bright, popsicle red is the color associated with this chakra)
Carrying a piece of obsidian, or meditating with it. Obsidian is excellent for grounding and helps to stimulate the root chakra
When a person takes care of their root chakra, they are taking care of their entire self; mind, body and spirit. By tending to it, they will feel stronger and well-grounded, while fostering greater compassion.
