Imagine this:
You’re strolling on a beautiful sunny day, taking in the sights, breathing in the clean air flowing down through the river valley, you feel sharp in the mind, and able in body, to deal with the world when …. There off to the left, and slightly behind, you hear the sound of tires exploding against a curb, followed by the violent sound of scraping and twisting metal, then unceremoniously ending in a thud of expended energy against concrete, but it happens so fast you can’t identify what you heard, but you do react.
First you leap away in the opposite direction, and when you think you’re out of danger, you turn back to look, even as you’re still running, and see a scene straight out of a horror movie. There, crumbled up against the wall, is what use to be a fully loaded, brand new $65,000.00 SUV almost unrecognizable. In a fraction of a second, it is now tireless, belching steam and smoke from previously sealed units, and leaking a numerous automotive fluids all over the ground which begin to meandering their way into the storm drains.
What happened? You think to yourself.
The picture begins to unfold rapidly as you run back to the wreck dialing 911 on the approach. The operator answers, and to your surprise, she already knows about the accident, and says “The appropriate units have been dispatched, Thanks for calling”. Apparently everybody has a cell phone these days, and they don’t hesitate to use them.
Unbeknownst to most, sensors in the vehicle have detected the crash, and disabled the fuel supply at the source, so there is no fire. You arrive and peer through the window and you see a man dazed and wrestling with the air bag that has deployed, awakening to a situation he isn’t quite sure how he got in. You raise your voice to the occupant behind the glass and say, “Are You Alright?” He tries to respond, but he seems to be semi conscious, he sounds unintelligible especially behind the glass barrier, it’s was just too difficult to hear him, but what is perfectly clear is, you see, still clutched in his hand, a hand held communication device. In his condition I’ll bet he doesn’t even know he’s still holding it.
Is this my imagination, I think not! There is enough evidence to prove cell phone technology has added another distraction, to an already distracted crowd of new consumers and vehicle operators, but does that necessarily make it worse than driving
