Walking - a simple to perform exercise that provides incredible results.
My school provides a Walking P.E. class for (whom I believed were) the lazy and out of shape people. I was definitely wrong. Walking at a race-walk pace burns an incredible amount of calories and works the leg muscles. For the first four minutes, it seems like a joke, seeing a person walk as fast as they can. However, once a person begins walking around the eleven to twelve minute a mile speed, results can be amazing.
I walked one mile in eleven minutes. I just walked to the point I felt like jogging and kept speed walking at that rate. I'm a black belt in Tae Kwon Do, on the tennis team, can run under seven minute miles, am capable of doing sixty push-ups, and more. However, walking was one of the most efficient exercise methods I've ever tried.
Running not only hurts the knees, but mainly works on improving the muscles (unless you're in cross country), not the burning of excess calories. Walking, however, forces a person to control the output of energy from the legs. It takes more work to remain walking fast than to jog. After one mile, my shins burned worse than a thirty minute sparring class at my martial arts studio.
In short, for daily exercise and keeping trim, speed walking is the best form of exercise available.
