What does it mean to be a transgender being? It simply is a title that is given to those of us who have decided years after being born that they want to be the opposite sex. Many physicians in the past, have thought that it was simply the effects of being exhibited with too much sex hormone for the baby’s brain. This however was proven to be true, in animals used for experiments, however humans born with unbalanced hormones have not proven this to be true. When a baby is born you don’t hear a doctor say “It’s a boy and a girl,” unless it is a result of twins. The gender role that is given at birth follows them throughout their life and can influence them if they are uncomfortable in their own body. The human needs to be comfortable in their body biologically, psychologically as well as socially.
There are three classifications that go along with the Gender Identity Disorder and they are Total, Partial Unlimited, and Partial Limited. Total means that they are either into transsexualism or are into cross dressing. Partial Unlimited means that they are wanting to be living as their opposite sex, and Partial Limited strictly means that they are either Homosexual, Bisexual or Lesbian. In order to correctly label a transsexual as such, they need to satisfy certain guidelines such as , if they feel discomfort towards or feel improper about their sexual anatomy, Does that person feel the need to get rid of their genitalia and live as the opposite sex, Has the interruption of not being in the “correct” body been ongoing for two years or more, Are there any genetic defects or congenital sex hormone disorders?, Have they been to a psychiatrist to prove an absence of mental disorders, such as schizophrenia or severe depression.
Many doctors believed, transsexualism to be an imaginary disorder, in the past, that was treated with medications and electric shock therapy, however it did not seem to work. They also believed that if a person was taught correctly and learned correctly that they would not be feeling as if they should be the opposite sex. According to Andrology, studies have shown that parents of female to male transsexuals, mothers more often, are envious of their husband, so their child ends up wanting to be like their father. The same goes for the male to female transsexuals, whereas the girls want to be men, the men want to be women. It is not clearly explained when this came about, it is known though that it is something
