The Atkins diet, officially called the Atkins Nutritional Approach, is a high-protein, high-fat and very low-carbohydrate, low-sugar regimen created by diet pioneer Robert Atkins. It is a form of ketogenic diet. He made it from a research paper he read in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

The diet is based on the theory that overweight people eat too many carbohydrates. Human body burns carbohydrates and fat for energy.

Doctor Atkins says - if you limit carbohydrate intake and associate with high protein, the body would burn more fat. It increases weight loss. But if you have a high level of carbohydrates it causes insulin, leading to increased hunger and obesity.

Atkins made this large "low-carb craze" to resolve his own overweight problem and later popularized it in a series of books. First book was Dr. Atkins' Diet Revolution in 1972. In his second book, Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution, he modified diet and changed parts of it.

The Atkins diets program allows meats, eggs and cheese, and severely foods such as pasta, bread and fruit. This is unrestricted amounts of protein and some foods containing carbohydrates.

The Atkins diet excludes foods such as bread, pasta, fruit, and sugar. It doesn’t mean that you should gorge yourself on fatty foods. You should eat "liberally" foods such as butter, meat, cheese and eggs.

It’s suggested by Atkins Nutritional Approach that intake of saturated fats should be limited to 20% of total calories. However it's hard to stick to a diet that restricts such a big chunk of the food pyramid. Nutritionists and medical professionals are still unconvinced.

Since the Atkin Diet made headlines in the late '90s, there has been different versions of low carbohydrate and traditionally high carbohydrate products such as bread, pasta and even candy.

The Atkins Diet have made a real impact on the diet culture. It caused an explosion of low carb diets popularity in the nineties to early 2000.
