Hillary Clinton as the JFK of 2008: Fair comparison or blasphemy?

by Ted Sherman

Now, cool it, all you Hillary haters. I know your immediate response is, "Where is Lee Harvey Oswald just when we need him?" But, whatever you think of Hillary Clinton, she has the guts to stand up for her convictions. And, unlike the current President, admit her mistakes about the war that is tearing apart America.

Mrs. Clinton's campaign mantra calls for a total pullout of US troops from Iraq and Afhanistan, if not during the current President's term, she promises it will happen when she is elected President in 2008. Three years ago she voted for the invasion. Now, she, like few other politicians, has said publicly that she was wrong. At this moment, as the polls indicate, more than 70% of Americans agree with her.

In her recent speech to New Hampshire Democrats, Mrs. Clinton compared her campaign to Kennedy's in 1960. She emphasized that until then, no Catholic had been elected President. Then, she added pointedly that until now, no woman has succeeded to the top post in the US. It was a very strong hint that, if her comparison doesn't offend too many Democrats and voters, she can win the job.

Will the linking of her name to that of Kennedy help her campaign, or cause more derision among her detracters? One thing for sure, the gutsy Hillary Clinton won't be backing down any time soon from her fierce determination to become that first woman President.
