The sun was shining, not a cloud in the sky. Birds were singing sweetly, the morning dew just about dissipated and too bad for Cathy as she was knee deep in manure, finishing up chores before school. She often helped her dad milk the cows when she didn't have volleyball practice before school, dragging her butt out of her toasty warm bed a 6 am didn't bother her too much. With a skip in her walk she scooted through the basement and up into a quick hot shower before grabbing her backpack and dashing out the door to catch the bus.
She was lucky as the ride was only 15 minutes both ways, her friend had an hour of bouncing around before arriving at I.D.C.I, the local high school. Spirits were up as both students and staff were anticipating the summer holidays, just a week away. As usual the next week would basically be review for most classes, the keeners were busy picking the teacher's brains, the 'average' student was going to class just to make sure they weren't missing any study notes and the slackers were already on summer holidays. Not bad kids by any means, just a little misdirected when it came to attitude and school. Cathy was in the 'Athlete' category, not a 'Prep' or a 'Nerd' or 'Stoner,' as you may be familiar. She played most every sport well, had an above eighty average in everything but math and was liked by pretty much everybody, regardless of what category they were in. Today was Friday and her afternoon consisted of lunch, double spare and geography class at the very end of the day. She wasn't normally one of the deviants but she convinced herself that missing her last class today was meant to be. But she wasn't going to do it alone and she knew it wouldn't take too many tugs to get her friend Tracy to join her, besides she needed her pool. Tracy's dad was a strict principle at the middle school down the street, but more importantly it was hot, she had a pool and lived right across the street.
They were pretty sure nobody was home and that was confirmed as they headed across the street and no cars were in the driveway. The adrenaline was running, as Cathy had never skipped before. It was kind of exhilarating, playing hooky in plain sight across from the school, the thrill most definitely could be addictive. Lucky for Cathy she had a 90 percent in geography and her teacher was really cool. He wouldn't likely inquire into her absence
