College dating: 10 tips for dating safely

College is a fantastic experience in a young person’s life, it’s a time to experiment, meet new people and gain a sense of independence. Dating whilst attending college is a great way to get know new people and potentially find a new partner, however it is important to remain safe whilst doing so. Often drinking and partying can overrule safety but there are some things you can do to ensure that you date safely, throughout your college life:

• Always tell a roommate or close friend where you are going and roughly what time you can be expected back. This way they will know where to find you, in case of an emergency. If you find yourself running later than expected, remember to let your friend know by text or phone call.

• Make sure you take a phone that has call credit on it. Many students are on a tight budget but making sure you have enough money to call someone if needed, can be reassuring.

• Go on a double date. If you have a date planned why not match make, a friend of yours with one of your date’s friends? Double dating is not only more fun but it is also safer to go with a trusted friend, than go alone. It can also help if you are particularly shy, to have a friend at your side for moral support.

• Carry a purse alarm or a whistle in your bag. This may seem a bit over the top but it is always best to be prepared, just in case you run into trouble. Alarms can be purchased relatively inexpensively and carrying them can give you some peace of mind.

• Ask a friend to drive you to the location of your date and pick you up afterwards. This can be a particularly good idea if it’s a blind date or if the date will involve drinking alcohol. It will ensure that you have a safe journey home and someone there, waiting to pick you up.

• At college many dates may involve attending a party or bar, where alcohol is readily available. Try to drink sensibly and remain aware of your surroundings, always keep a keen eye on your drink and keep any valuables, in sight at all times.

• Carrying some emergency money can be a lifesaver. Keep some money aside, perhaps some change for a pay phone or a taxi ride home and tell yourself not to spend it, unless it’s an emergency.

• When going on dates, try to pick a place to meet that you are familiar with. Perhaps it’s a place where your friends often visit or a restaurant that you regularly frequent. Go to a place where there will be lots of other people around, so you will be noticed and feel secure.

• Arrange a daytime date. Going on a daytime date can be fun and is a lot safer; meet up for coffee at a local café or go for a long walk together in the park.

• Whilst going on any date, particularly with someone you may not know too well, remember to keep your wits about you. Be smart and trust your instinct, if at any time throughout the date you feel uncomfortable or unsafe, say your goodbyes and leave.
