Okay, ladies. Just because you’re in the mood for a romance movie doesn’t mean you have to leave your guy behind and watch it with your BFFs, or force him to sit through some sappy chick flick. There are actually movies out there that appeal to the male need for action and adventure, good old-fashioned guy humor or hot sexy scenes, yet fulfill your desire for romance and love.
So ... say goodnight to Sleepless in Seattle, bon voyage to Titanic and au revoir to Casablanca. Here are 10 romantic films with lead male characters that men can actually identify with, plus a little babeliciousness because, after all, they are men!
Father Goose (1964)
Suspense, romance, danger and the comedic style of Cary Grant come together in the 1960s classic Father Goose. Grant is Walter Eckland, a society dropout who bums around on an old yacht in the South Seas and acts as a look out for enemy planes and ships during WWII. When Grant’s character, a hard-drinking, antisocial, but lovable misanthrope, gets trapped on a remote island with seven schoolgirls and their beautiful teacher (Leslie Caron), the battle of the sexes begins. The plot thickens when the Japanese land and go searching for the inhabitants of the island.
The Princess Bride (1987)
The title alone would make most guys run for the nearest manly establishment, but The Princess Bride is chock-full of guy-pleasing sword fights, revenge, torture, giant wrestlers, and rodents of unusual size. You know, all those things that keep a guy’s attention. While it is a somewhat sappy story of true love between a girl (Robin Wright, before Penn) and a farm boy (Cary Elwes) who will face all odds to be together blah, blah blah, the film offers Monty Python-style chuckles and adventure.
Six Days, Seven Nights (1998)
When a gruff pilot named Quinn (Harrison Ford), and a workaholic city girl (Anne Heche) crash land on a seemingly deserted tropical island, they battle against the elements, modern-day pirates and each other in Six Days, Seven Nights. As danger ensues so do the comic adventures. Romance blossoms between the two as does their need to get off the island, fast.
The Wedding Singer (1998)
Adam Sandler is the down-on-his-luck songwriter-turned-wedding-singer Robbie Hart, who just can’t get a break even in love. Drew Barrymore is Julia, the darling bride-to-be, who has captured Robbie’s heart but is otherwise engaged. Sandler’s song renditions (“Somebody kill me, please!”)
