Best weapons for use against zombies

When preparing to fight zombies there are a few basic fundamentals you will need to know before choosing your weapon.

You will need to know approximately the number of zombies you are facing, and how much ammunition you will have available. Another important factor is if you will be fighting from a fixed well-fortified position, or out in the mess with them.

The type of zombie is important also. Are they squishy viral zombies waiting to convert you or the more placid stalking zombies that don’t splash too much when you shoot them?

Your main goal is to disconnect the brain from the rest of the body, either by destroying it, decapitation or dismemberment. Zombies do not react like in the movies, you can cut a hand off and it will not crawl across the floor after you. It is separated from the brain, therefore it is dead.

There are several types of weapons for zombie fighting.

-Firearms

Firearms are your number one choice for zombie fighting. You can stay away from the zombie and kill it without the risk of infecting yourself. It takes a head shot to stop a zombie with a gun or else a whole lot of ammo to dismember it.

-Rifles

Many people think they will just pick up and assault rifle and go to town on the zombies. With this kind of thinking you will most likely end up shuffling after your friends in a short amount of time.  Remember head shots. Semi auto is good but even a bolt action is ok if you are in a fortified position. “One shot one kill” is the name of the game fighting zombies with a rifle.

Any caliber will work ok as long as you can keep feeding it. A .22 long rifle will even work but you must be prepared for few shots to glance off of the skull and not penetrate. Just be ready with a follow up shot, just in case. A good scope will be an asset for your rifle in nearly every situation.

-Handguns

Get something you can shoot well, since once again you will be only interested in head shots. Any center fire handgun 9MM or larger should work well for you. Semi auto is really the way to go since it can be reloaded quickly in situations that call for it.

-Shotguns

Shotguns bring a mixed blessing to the fight. They have a lot of firepower and can push back a zombie that is getting too close. If you are using 00 buck, each shot will put out nine .33 caliber lead pellets capable of penetrating a zombie skull. Drawbacks include large heavy ammo so you can't carry near as much with you at one time.
