Twitter blocked as protests hit Egypt

The White House and the President are fearful of saying and doing anything that might inflame and even influence The Society of the Muslim Brothers, an Islamic group that is known as the largest political opposition group in the MIddle East.   At the same time, the White House and the President are urging Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak to use this moment to embrace reforms his country is literally screaming for.

The Egyptian government has long been known as an autocratic government ruled by Mubarak for over 30 years. Despite this hard-handed rule and restriction of freedom on the Egyptian people, Egypt has a peace agreement with Israel established back in 1941 and is one of the biggest allies of the U.S. in the mideast region. For this reason alone, the situation as it unfolds is extremely critical to the United States and our potential relationship with the mideast.

The Muslim Brothers are an anti-israel, anti-American regime, yet they condemned the 9-11 attacks and support rights for women. If the Egyptian government falls, it is widely expected that The Society of Muslim Brothers would claim victory for the people of Egypt.

In order to help try and stop a rising insurgency, the Egyptian government, led by Mubarak has shut down the internet as well as TV and radio communication. This includes social networking sites such as Twitter. A recent attempt by the protestors in Egypt to storm the State Television building has reportedly failed.

During the press conference with White House PRess Secretary Robert Gibbs, many questions were raised as to what the White House and most specifically the President are doing to help quell this protest. Word from the White House is that they are in constant contact with the President but President Obama has yet to speak directly with Egyptian President Mubarak. The White House continues to hold its stance that this crises will be resolved only by the Egyptian people and that they urge non-violence by the people and the military who have both taken to the streets. Many are concerned that President Obama has not talked directly to President Mubarak and that he has not addressed the American People. Of course, any comments made by the President are not just for the American People, but for President Mubarak and the people of Egypt.

At this time all aid has been cut off to Egypt mostly in fear that the money may fall into the wrong hands should the Egyptian government fall.
