How can people spend so much time watching TV

by Heather Burrows

Created on: January 28, 2011

This is a topic on which I think about all the time: how can people spend so much time watching TV? Only because I used to be one of those people. For a long period of time, I couldn’t think why but now I know. When watching the television, your brain switches off to the world around you and you can just relax and forget about everything. After all, the TV does all of the thinking for you, all you have to do is sit and enjoy it! This is a very big problem though because it puts the imaginative part of our brain to sleep. We begin to think that life doesn’t get any better than this because we can’t be bothered to think or work any harder than we’re already doing. We begin to feel content with the average lifestyle and forget about aiming for the gold; our own dreams.

It’s so sad to watch this happen too because deep down inside, we won’t ever be truly happy. We go to work everyday, to the average 9 ‘til 5 job, and look forward to coming home to just stick the TV on and put our feet up, which we believe we fully deserve after working so hard at work, right? What about all of our passions and visions that we have inside of us though? We can’t just ignore and forget about them! That’s exactly what we do when we switch on the tele and relax, which feels so good at first because you get to switch your brain off until the next dreadful day at work. In switching on the TV though, we’re switching off our deepest desires, passions and dreams that we’ve had since we were born, so it would feel like. We’re closing off that part of us which so desperately wants to get out there and be fulfilled; rather a sad story when you think about it.

It’s hardly surprising though because that’s how our average, normal human life is portrayed in the world: get up, work 9 ‘til 5 somewhere, come home, tea and tele, then finally, bed. How boring that is though? When we’re 60-years-old and look back on our lives, are we going to say we made it in life and achieved all of our dreams? Or are we going to look back on our lives and regret it and say, why oh why didn’t I do that back then? Oh yes I know, I had to watch every episode of coronation street, eastenders, emerdale, the bill, etc. We end up driving ourselves insane because we get so disappointed and angry with ourselves, we constantly think that we could have done what we wanted to back then, we were just too blinded from watching
