Born in 1919, J.D. Salinger, author of The Catcher in the Rye, has become one of the most controversial writers of his time. Since it's publication, The Catcher in the Rye has been banned from quite a few schools, at least in the United States. With rude language and crude acts it is no wonder his book was banned from so many schools.
The main character, Holden Caulfield, finds himself kicked out of school with no where else to turn. It is only a few days before the end of the semester, so instead of going straight home, Holden decides to live a little in the New York nightlife. From cigarettes and alcohol, to prostitutes and pimps, Holden explores almost every aspect of adult life without regards to himself.
However, there is some hope for this character's life. His passion for becoming the "Catcher in the Rye" is the one aspiration that will eventually save this character from completely ruining his life. To find out what it means to be a "Catcher in the Rye" you will have to read this novel. I can't give away too much.
J.D. Salinger has a great talent, and he shows that in this novel. Salinger covers every aspect of describing not only scenery but characteristics of everyone in the plot. The best part of the whole story comes through the exploitation of quite a few character flaws in everyday characters in the story. The plot gets a touch more realism with every new character introduced. From his little sister, Pheobe, to what used to be his favorite teacher in school. However, the reader sees more of Holden's real character when interacting with the adolesence in the plot.
I strongly recommend The Cather in the Rye for anyone looking for a good read. Sometimes it is difficult to find a book you are really interested in for the whole book. This one is a pretty short read, with a big plot. Follow this character in his few days of adventure and decisions that could mold the rest of his life.
