There are many science projects out there that are worth trying. Listed below are ten fun and educational science projects that are done by many public schools across the United States.
Volcano Project
With a pop bottle, some clay, red food coloring, some vinegar, and two tablespoons of baking soda an erupting volcano can be made for a great science project. An adult should help with the mixing and erupting steps of the project. To make this project more advanced for older students, they can write a small report on plate tectonics and perhaps draw a volcano diagram.
Insect project
Insect projects are done in many schools around the country and is a very good project. Sealed containers, paper, a square piece of Styrofoam, colorful pins, alcohol dipped cotton balls, a marker, and a bug net is everything each student needs to do an insect project. The goal is to collect and label as many six legged insects as they can in a week, using the pins to display them on the Styrofoam. Spiders don't count, because they are eight legged arachnids. They should use the alcohol balls and containers to store the crawlies so that they are dead before going on the pins. The paper and marker is for creating a label for the type of insect. The labels should be pinned down next to each insect. This is recommended for ages twelve and up and is not recommended for anyone that is allergic to bees.
Solar system project
Needed for this project is paint, Styrofoam balls of varying sizes, pins, hot glue gun, and a thick piece of cardboard (or several pieces glued together). Nails and a wood board can be used instead of pins and cardboard. This project is meant for them to paint and display all the planets rotating around the sun in the correct order. The balls go on the pins with some hot glue and the pin heads get pushed down into the cardboard so that the planets stay in one place for display. Pins can be put around Jupiter to symbolize Jupiter's rings.
Vegetable project
Growing vegetables is a great way to teach science. Have each student pick a piece of paper out of a hat with a vegetable name on it. They will have to water, grow and care for a vegetable seed growing into a plant. They can even measure the height each day with a ruler and document their results.
Castle project
Have them create a miniature medieval castle with all the proper parts on it.
