Is God afraid of us?
Show yourself, God. Where are you? You may be omnipotent, but the one thing you, (and all Gods) are afraid of are your own creations. In Spy Kids 2: The Island of Lost Dreams (2002), the character Dr. Romero (Steve Buscemi) who genetically creates new animals, fears for his life, thinking his creations want to destroy him for his experiments on them. In a famous line, he mutters: “Do you think God stays in Heaven because He’s afraid of what He’s created on Earth?” It was a very thoughtful line and maybe gives some insight as to why God does not appear on Earth. He is afraid of us.
Why should he be afraid of us? An all-powerful being is always afraid of being unloved, usurped, surpassed, forgotten, and rejected. So God has to maintain a discreet distance, lest he be mistaken for anything less than the Supreme Being.
God would be afraid of us, because though he created us in his image; we humans are flawed and surely we would ask God why he created us so and why we are not more perfect. If God were on Earth, we would see him reflected in ourselves and slowly grow to dislike him out of familiarity or our human nature to dislike and alienate others. Like some parents who are afraid of their children; they don’t want to be disappointments or failures to them, God is afraid of us because no matter his power, he will be seen as a disappointment to many. He would not have answers to everything for everyone. He would have let people down, destroying any faith or trust in him.
With six billion humans on Earth, and counting, not every single person will worship God. In fact, there are many who would openly rebel against God, even if he revealed his presence on Earth. There would never be peace on Earth whether God showed himself or not, as the many hundreds of religious and non-religious factions would always be fighting amongst each other. There is no one true religion, even among God worshippers and the many misinterpretations and man-made iterations of God’s word would only serve to further negate God’s power. Which religion could God possibly favour after so many millennia of religious dilution?
Once God was revealed, his majesty and power uncovered, God would be rejected as the Supreme Being. No matter if God came down to Earth in the form of an old man with a flowing white beard or as a wispy entity we would be disappointed in God as he could not be all things to all people. We humans demand exclusivity
