How to create a blog

by Kevin Sanchez

Created on: January 23, 2011

So you finally decided to write a blog? Congratulations, you've made the right choice! Creating your virtual home on the web where you can share what you want to with the whole world... who would not want a blog? Best of all; anyone can do it, there's nothing you need to start your own blog. Well, you need an Internet connection but it's chances are you have one, otherwise you wouldn't be reading this article, would you? Other than an Internet connection, there are no requirements, you don't even have to spend a single dime since there are lots of free blogging services to be found on the Internet. Let's get on with it, shall we?

= Find a blogging platform that works for you =

To start a blog, you will want to use a blogging platform which will enable you to start posting right away. Currently, there are five popular blogging services on the web: LiveJournal, Xanga, WordPress, Blogger, Webs. They all offer the same service but they all gave their own twist to it. The latter one even offers a free website to run alongside your blog. It's up to you to find the one which suits you best. It's different for everyone. While I like Wordpress, you might be better off with Blogger. You'll need to find out which one suits your personal needs.

= Give your blog a personal touch =

Hopefully you've found a blogging platform that you seem to like. You may now want to send your very first blog post into the blogosphere, but I'm here to stop you! You shouldn't even write a single letter before you gave your blog a personal touch. It is by far the most important part of setting up a blog.

You will want to reach a certain amount of readers, right? Imagine visiting a gray, dull blog that has been written on straight away, without that personal touch? Would you feel eager to return the next day? Nope. Your blog should attract readers and encourage them to bookmark your blog or subscribe to your RSS-feed. I'm not saying a good looking blog will do just that (because the content of the blog also defines how many readers one will attract) but it'll help greatly.

Do away with the standard layout. Change the template (consult the manual of the blogging platform you've chosen if you're not sure how to go about this), make your own header in your favorite image editor, give your blog a name and description, maybe add widget here and there.

= Fasten your seat belts: we're ready to launch! =

Now that your blog became your virtual house on the web, nicely decorated and all, we're ready to
