Your infant’s baptism, the first of the seven Sacraments of the Roman Catholic Church, is the doorway to his or her Christian life. The fact that most Catholics were baptized as babies and that most baptisms occur before, after, or between Mass leaves many parents not sure what the requirements of baptism are and what to expect when their child gets baptized .
How do I choose sponsors?
Most Catholic churches require the sponsors or godparents to be at least 16 years of age, be practicing Catholics who regularly attend Mass on Sundays and Holy Days of Obligation, receive the Sacraments regularly, and, if they are married, have been married by the Catholic Church. The reason for this is that godparents are expected to assist the parents with raising the child as practicing Catholics through encouragement, example, and prayer. If you plan on choosing a non-Catholic, let your parish priest and your chosen person(s) know in the early stages of your pregnancy. Most likely the chosen person(s) will be required to attend Mass at least 6 months before the baptism and receive the Sacraments before the baptism occurs. If the chosen people are practicing Catholics, they may be required to attend a preparation class.
Can I choose more than 2 godparents?
No, according to the Instruction of the Catholic Church, there can only be two sponsors of which 1 is a man and 1 is a woman.
When are Roman Catholics baptized?
Contrary to popular belief, there isn’t an age limit to Roman Catholic baptisms. Typically, infants between 3 to 6 months of age are baptized. Older children usually attend a baptismal preparation class with their parents.
What if parents weren’t married in the Church?
Parents who are not in good standing with the church because of getting married outside the Catholic Church or for any other reason are encouraged to speak to the parish priest as soon as possible. Parents who were married outside the church may possibly have their marriage convalidated in the church. This, however, is usually not a requirement for baptizing your child.
What is worn?
Most babies and children wear the color white, as it is the color of purity and the presence of God. Outfits range from simple white dresses or rompers to ornate full-length gowns with pearls and lace for girls or embroidered suits for boys. Adults who are baptized usually wear business attire.
