If you’re looking for a business that is easy and quick to start and requires minimal financial outlay and equipment, then a home cleaning business could well be the answer.  Most people possess at least some cleaning products and equipment already.  Marketing of the business can be done at little or no cost.  As with any business however there is a requirement to observe any laws and regulations relating to the work activities, finances and the running of the business. 

To get started in a home cleaning business some initial research and planning needs to be undertaken on a range of issues.

1.  Who Will Perform the Labor?

If the cleaning work is to be carried out by one person then the paperwork is relatively simple, when staff are to be employed this necessitates further payroll services, insurances and other associated costs of providing employment.

2.  Insurance

The business should insure against accidents and any risks of harm to its employees as well as any damage or harm to customers and their property that could result from the cleaning activities. 

3. Cleaning Products

Cleaning products will need to be purchased and it makes sense to buy in bulk to reduce costs.  An estimate of the quantities that will be required in the start up stage of the business could be made according to the expected number of customers to be serviced while taking into account the amount of room that is available to store the products.

As some customers are moving towards having their homes cleaned with environmentally friendly products, not only for ecological reasons but also to assist with health issues such as asthma and allergies, it may be necessary to acquire appropriate products to cater for the requirements of these customers.  Offering environmentally friendly cleaning can also be a positive point of difference when selling the business’s cleaning services.

4. Cleaning Equipment

Some customers prefer their homes to be cleaned with their own equipment and cleaning products while others customers will expect their cleaner to provide everything.  Depending on the services that are to be offered, the equipment needed might include ladders, vacuums, dusters, window washers, brooms, mops and an assortment of cleaning cloths.
