The Republic of Costa Rica is undeniably one of the most beautiful and breath taking areas in Central America, making it a long time favorite travel destination for travelers world wide.
There are two seasons in Costa Rica, the dry season and the green season. The dry season runs from December through April which are the areas busiest travel months for the area. The prices for accommodations and rental cars are at their highest during these dry months. It can also be difficult to find a place to stay if you did not make advance reservation.
The temperatures in Costa Rica do not vary much throughout the year. The average temperature in San Jose is usually between fifty-seven to seventy-five degrees in December and sixty-three to eighty-one degrees in May. San Jose is known for having delightful weather year round. The high temperatures in Costa Rica during the summer months range from the low 70's to mid 90's.
The green season runs from May through November with the heaviest month for rainfall in October. The area still offers about five hours a day of blue skies and sunshine during this time. Prices for accommodations, rental cars and activities are less expensive during the green months. It is also easier to find places to stay. Costa Rica is beautiful to visit at any time of the year but many consider the months between late November to early January to be some of the very best since there is little rainfall and most days are filled with beautiful blue skies.
Depending on what activities you are interested in doing when visiting Costa Rica, you will want to consider the potential amount of rainfall. If you desire to see the numerous volcano's the region has to offer, it is best to visit these from November through May. If you enjoy the beaches, the best time to visit the Pacific side of Costa Rica is from December through May, however the Caribbean side is usually flooded during the month of October. The best time for surfing in Costa Rica is from March through November. For fishing, the best time is from December through March, particularly in Quepos and Manuel Antonio.
You will find little rainfall and more blue skies between January to the later part of April, particularly in the Western and Central regions.
