Poetry: Drugs

by Irene Davault

Created on: January 21, 2011

He once wore a suit, clean and pressed.
Worked hard to give his family the best.
His demeanor showed a fine character, a
Pride in his accomplishments.
Then he met me, Drugs.

Once she had dreams of finishing school.
Becoming  the first in her family pool,
To become a teacher and help the youth.
Her goal was worthy, she felt confident.
Then she met me, Drugs.

I gave them a good time, the first time.

They enjoyed their journey with me,
so they thought, and then came back for more.
But I did not care for their lofty goals,
or fine character, or accomplishments.

I would make them how I wanted them to be,
They would learn to depend on me.
I would make them dirty and  uncaring,
Loose their jobs, quit their schooling.

They would come to hate their disposition.
They would cry  and  try to escape,
but  I held them in bondage,
They were no longer free to choose.
They know my name well, it is Drugs.
