Winter weather can wreak havoc with your household budget. If you live in a cold climate, no doubt your experience higher electric and gas bills during the winter months.  It is possible to prevent these skyrocketing costs in the winter. It takes a few simple preventative measures to create some money saving tips for winter. So, get busy winterizing your home this season. Your budget will be glad you did.

Adequate insulation

One of the best money saving tips for your home in the winter is to be sure it is well insulated.  Be sure there is adequate insulation in those areas where is the heat is apt to escape from your home.  Consider hiring a contractor to install more insulation in any deficient areas. The extra cost of hiring a contractor will be worth it when the cold winter winds blow. Saving money on your heating bills will soon make up for the cost of hiring a contractor.

Good roof

Make sure your roof is in good condition to help save money during the winter.  A good roof will prevent the loss of heat and prevent cold air from entering your home.  Hire a roofing contractor to check your roof’s condition.  Roof repair is worth the extra savings you will experience on your heating bills in the winter.

Purchase storm doors and windows

Install storm windows and doors to save money in the winter.  Storm doors and windows keep the cold out and the heat in.  It will be surprising how much money you will save by installing storm doors and windows. Most local home improvement stores carry storm doors and windows.  They vary in price and quality so do your homework before purchasing them.

Close off unused rooms

Shut the doors and close the vents in any unused rooms in your home.  It isn’t necessary to heat these rooms.  This is a very simple way to save money during the winter.

Lower your thermostat

Another way to save money during the winter is to lower your thermostat to sixty-five, especially during the day when no one is at home.  You can also lower your thermostat at night while your family is asleep.  Provide warm comforters and heavy blankets for family members to stay warm while they sleep.  Cooler room temperatures prevent dried out nasal passages and respiratory infections.

There are many money saving tips for the winter.  It takes some financial investment for adequate insulation, a good roof, storm windows and doors, but the savings will be worth the money you spend. Consider lowering your thermostat during the day, closing off vents and doors in unused rooms and finally lowering your thermostat at night.
