On Sunday, January 2,  Zsa Zsa Gabor was once again taken to the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles. She had cancerous lesions in her  right leg, as well as had gangrene. Her husband, Prince Frederic von Anhalt, had a decision to make. Either keep Zsa Zsa on antibiotics and face the risk of having her kidneys damaged or have her leg amputated; with a fifty percent chance of survival. Her husband was also warned not to tell her about the surgery. They feared that her blood pressure would go up and it would be difficult for her to recover from it.

On Friday, January 14, Zsa Zsa had her right leg amputated. She was not even aware that she had the surgery, but she was smiling and joking about it. However, they are going to monitor her very closely. She was released from the hospital on Saturday, January 22.  She now has to stay in bed for the next two months and she needs 24/7 nursing care.

On Tuesday, February 1, she was spitting up blood, and once again, she was taken to the hospital. At the same time, her husband collapsed in the elevator at the same hospital. He was admitted for a lung infection but then he was later released. Zsa Zsa remained at the hospital, but she was released on Sunday, February 6, her 94th birthday.

On Wednesday, March 2, Zsa Zsa was once again admitted to the hospital because there was no blood flow in her left leg. The doctors wanted to amputate it, but this time, she said no. Her husband said that there would be a 50-50 chance that she would survive without the surgery. Zsa Zsa was once again released on Friday, March 4.

They are now selling their 28-room Bel-Air mansion for twenty-eight million dollars. Her medical bills are $21,000 a month. She has no other health insurance but Medicare. Her husband is paying $30,000 a month on the house, and they're only using two rooms. He simply can't afford it anymore. They plan to move to a 1.5 million-dollar condominium in Westwood. But there is a catch. That the two of them stay in the house until Zsa Zsa dies, and the new owner has to pay for everything. However, her daughter Francesca (by her second husband, Conrad Hilton) is ready to fight this. Since Prince Frederic signed a prenuptial agreement, he has no rights in the matter.

Prince Frederic also decided to sell her fur coats to help raise money for her medical bills. He can't afford to pay for the storage costs, and she doesn't even need them anymore.
