Blind vs. discerning patriotism

Personally, I don't think the issue is about blind versus discerning. At least in the context that these articles present. To me, it's what is it about America that makes you patriotic? Is it about abusing the hard-won privileges (freedoms and liberties) that are so often taken for granted as entitlements in this country; which I might add would be summarily terminated if your "tolerant" Islamic heroes had any power at all. For example, your privilege to watch a voyeuristic Jerry Springer show that does NOTHING constructive for ANYONE except maybe Jerry Springer's bank account. On the other hand, are you patriotic about cherishing those privileges to the extent of praying and dying for them. Perish the thought of cheapening them for petty narcissism just because you know some brave soldier will give his life for your gratuitous one as you wear and tear those privileges down, forcing society to pass bad law to protect your self-destructive behavior. For example, I consider it a great privilege to heartily debate these issues on a great public forum like Helium has provided (that should get me some brownie points) without threat of violence from fellow citizens or from the state. Excuse me, but refusing to listen to or play Dixie Chicks because they abuse their privileges is NOT censorship. Try that excuse on some Chinese dissidents and see them laugh in your face.

Not to take a rabbit trail about the influence of Biblical law on the founders of the Constitution, but even the FEW (yes, FEW) atheists, deists (whatever) that were consulting those weighty issues admitted, and even admonished their political brethren that this experiment could never succeed unless the citizens so cherished their God-given inalienable rights and morality that they would never abuse them for the trashy, frivolous causes we do today. In other words, a car may be able to take unbelievable abuse and neglect and still run faithfully on a cold, winter morning; however, if you want it to perform faithfully at 250,000 miles, you'd better faithfully service it at least every 5,000 miles. Similarly, I would contend that the radical feminist movement of the sixties (that IS waining now) would have never seen the light of day if the soldiers coming home after WWII had given due credit to the incredible sacrifices that women played in winning that war. That lack of appreciation bred some serious resentment and apathy for the culture and quality of life we fought so hard to maintain.
