If you're looking for a small pet that doesn't require a lot of space, is quiet, clean, intelligent, doesn't make much noise and is bubbling over with affection, you may want to consider a pet rat. Pet rats, or fancy rats as they are often called, can be the perfect solution for apartment dwellers or anyone who prefers small animals as pets.
Rats are naturally social animals, so it is always best to have two. Unless you want a rat population explosion in your home, it is best to start with two females. Whether you buy from a breeder or a pet store, be sure to check the gender of the rats before you purchase. Some pet stores sell only female rats as a store policy. Meet and greet your rats in the store - handle them to make sure they are not too skittish and are amenable to handling. Although most rats take to humans quite quickly, you don't want to bring home a rat who won't adjust well. Fancy pet rats do not carry disease as their wild cousins may, and they clean themselves very much the same way cats do.
Because rats are social by nature, they will look forward to seeing you every time you visit their cage. Although their eyesight is poor, they have excellent senses of smell and hearing. Your rats will get to know you very well through these senses and excitedly wait to greet you when you come near. Bring small treats with you when you handle them and any barriers between you and your pets will quickly fall.
Rats are affectionate and love to climb up on your shoulders or ride on the back of your neck. Because they have a natural urge to burrow, you might find your rat's favorite spot is at the nape of your neck, nestled underneath your hair. They will happily sit with you on your favorite chair while you watch television. They are excellent companions with loads of personality. Rats are furry, warm and cuddly too!
Rats are also incredibly intelligent. They easily learn their names and will come when called. They can also be taught tricks by a diligent owner. They love to play with toys and will happily climb if you provide the opportunity in their cage. Two rats will romp and play together in their cage, chasing each other and tumbling. Just watching your rats can provide hours of fun.
Fancy pet rats don't normally bite or make noise. They don't squeal like other pet rodents. The only time a rat may bite is if they mistakenly think your hand contains a treat and even then they never bite hard. If a rat makes a noise, it is generally due to some injury or pain - be sure you haven't accidentally closed the cage on you rat's tail!
Rat's needs are small - a cage, bedding, food, water and lots of love. They are excellent pets for both adults and children who are old enough to understand how to handle a small animal without injuring it. Because rats are nocturnal, their active hours are convenient for most people. They sleep during the day while you are at work or school and are ready to play upon your return. Keeping their cages clean is very easy, simply change the bedding. Both bedding and food can be purchased at many department stores and all pet stores. Giving your rats a special treat is easy, they can eat nearly anything humans do with a few exceptions.
Although many people initially balk at the thought of sharing their home with a rat, once you have experienced these sweet, intelligent creatures you will find they are amongst the most devoted and enjoyable pets you've ever owned.
