Cruises: The Perfect Vacation for Families
My husband's boss always says that he doesn't understand the appeal of several long days at sea. . . and shuffle board. This common misconception is definitely to the loss of those that likely imagine something akin to the "Love Boat." As a couple in our early thirties with two children, we have never experienced a more flexible, diverse and entertaining travel experience than on our five cruises. Shuffle board? Well, if you are really determined, you'll probably find it. But, if you prefer adventure, relaxation, romance and entertainment, you will not be disappointed.
We've done the Disney thing, a couple of times, and those that are experienced in travel with children (especially those that have pushed strollers around in blistering heat while waited in long lines for Ariel's autograph) can probably not fathom a vacation designed to meet the needs of every member of the family-even mom and dad! Undoubtedly, Orlando is a right-of-passage for the American child, but that isn't the only vacation destination that rises to the expectations of kids and parents alike.
There are multiple options for ships, days at sea, and destinations; but, the cruise line notorious for fun and a younger target audience is Carnival Cruise Lines, aka "The FUN Ships." Like every other travel destination, there are many price options and affordability choices, but the Caribbean cruises, especially during off season, are unbeatable for the value. During January and February (pre-spring break and post holiday season) cruise deals can be found for about 80% off the brochure prices.
So, a five night off season cruise deal can be found for about $250 a person. That's five nights lodging and all the food (and I mean ALL- completely, ridiculously, excessive amounts) that a person can consume in five days. For a family of four, that means two rooms (yes, mom and dad: a room all to yourself, if your children are at an appropriate age to sleep alone next door to you). Let me reiterate this key point-parents can sleep alone on their vacation! So, if one were to travel and actually book two hotel rooms at an average rate of $80 per night, for a five night stay that is $800, only $200 less than the price of an entire cruise. Considering the shows, meals, and the very fact that you are on a floating city enjoying ocean breezes and transportation to island hotspots, that extra $200 is a steal!
Again, even if only considering Caribbean
