In order to look at if Steve McClaren was the right man for the England job then you need to look at his record at club level before he took over, if he had any international experience and other factors.
Steve McClaren did well as the manager of Middles boroughwhen he was in charge of them for a few years and they made steady progress in the league. But doing well in the league and being able to motivate them does not mean he will be able to do the same with a international team where the teams you are playing against are better and it might prove harder to motivate the players if things are not going well. The only experience he had at international level was being the assistant to Sven Goran-Eriksson when he was in charge and even then it is not possible to say how much input he had with tactics and picking the players.
Also what needs to be considered is other managers who might want the job and have better experience than him , maybe Glenn Hoddle or a manager such as Stuart Pearce who has done really well with the under 21's. There are bound to be other managers around who have more experience and have managed bigger clubs and won trophies who should be considered before him.
Unfortunately the English FA was adamant about having a English manager which meant that they ruled out some great managers from abroad and then the problem is which English manager has the skills for the job and there are not many left who have not had the job. Also the last factor that is important to consider is that if he does a bad job with the England team and the public and supporters go against him will he be able to handle the pressure, if not then he should not consider the job as it is a high pressure job and the English fans have so much expectation and hope that will add to the pressure.
If England want to win a competition they need to have one of the best managers in the world no matter where he is from and unfortunately Steve cannot be perceived as one of them at the moment. Its about getting a manager who can win the games by knowing how to use the tactics effectively under pressure and making critical substitutions that can change a game.
